Just guessing, but I think the computer will throw a code if you disconnect it and you'll keep seeing the fault light on your dash. It might be different on yours than my 2001, but the number #10 fuse in the interior fuse box is the fuse for the RKEM. Find which fuse it is in yours and pull it out and see if you can go along without it.

I did a search and found nothing but people asking question about the RKEM, nobody selling one. Looks like the dealer for a new one or a salvage yard for a used one.
