My timing belt just went on my 02 PT at 115k miles. I took it to the shop I normally use and the tech told me that he wouldn't do the job because Chrysler has put a campaign out that requires an update to the entire system when this belt is changed and without the update the belt can go within a couple hundred miles. I've read in the forum that many have changed their own belts or had shops do the repair and I have seen no mention of this update.
What I am wondering is, does this update exist or does he just not want to do the job? |

I'm pretty sure that the "update" that are talking about is the updated timing belt tensioner. Chrysler came out with a new tensioner for the PT in 2003 and advised anyone replacing the belt to also put in the new tensioner. The old one wouldn't keep the correct tension on the belt and "I guess" cause the new belt to wear prematurely.
There's no other update that I could find in a search. IMHO If that's the way the mechanic is talking, I'd search around for someone else with more experience with the PT to do the job.

yeah the new tensioner requires to replace the whole timing belt cover, it is a bit of a project to get done, but if your tech dosen't want to do it maybe he is doing you a favor!
