Default Error Code 0700 on my 2001 PTC

Hi I just got error code 0700 (and 1684 but I read that one wasn't a problem) after my check engine light came on. I've read a few threads about it here but had a few unanswered questions.

Is there ANY way for me to get the transmission codes myself? The garage I go to charges like $100 to read my check engine codes so I was really excited to learn here that I could find them myself. Of course I get the one code that requires more scanning for better hidden codes. Do I just have to suck it up and pay for their magical scanning abilities or is there something I could do to find them?

Next question, say tomorrow morning I go turn on the car and the check engine light is no longer on, do I still HAVE to bring it in for repair? Or can I wait and see if it comes back on or something goes wrong? For the record, nothing "feels" wrong when I'm driving. The car just kind of jumped when I was accelerating, seemingly while changing gears (it's an auto), and then the light went on.

Thanks a lot for your advice!

if you've already gotten the P0700 code, that's as far as you can go. A diagnostic scanning tool from a dealer or mechanic will be needed to dig deeper. If the engine light is off, it could have been a random signal. Take off your negative battery cable for about 5 minutes. That will clear the code. Then, if it comes back on, a trip to the dealer or your personal mechanic will have to come next.
