Default Check Engine Light

I had to replace a power steering pressure switch because the check engine light came on and when the code was read it said that was the problem. Now that the repair has been made the light is still on. Do i need to reset it or should it reset itself? Thanks

To reset the computer back to zero codes. Take the negative battery cable off the battery for about 5 minutes.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. I had someone tell me to touch the positive cable to the negative cable once it was off the battery. Have you ever heard of that?

Probably the easiest and fastest way to reset the check engine light is to remove the negative battery cable, get inside and turn the key on and off twice and then reconnect the battery.

I've been resetting my light this way for the past three years. Why? Because my Whipple supercharger does not get enough cold air upon start up on a hot summer day. During the winter months, it never comes on. Actually, I just tore the dash apart and unsoldered the stupid light and now just hear the chime upon start up.

Question: I might be way off here but isn't the check engine light for emission issues? Why would your power steering have anything to do with it??? Oh well, reset it and see if it comes on again.

Thanks,

Thanks,

There's hundreds of codes that can come up that have nothing to do with the emissions. Each of the dozen or so sensors in and around the engine can set off a code. See the fault code list that Skylight added as a sticky in the Tech & Performance section of this forum. The code that might have come up that vgf11 saw was: P0550 Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Switch Circuit

Thanks for all the suggestions. When the check engine light came on I took it to have the code read and both times it said the problem was the power steering pressure switch. I replaced it but the light is still on. Thanks Again.

I have a 2006 pt cruiser 4 cyclinder. The check engine light came and it went into safety mode . the car wouldn't go any more then 25 MPR and my RMP hit 3 to 4. I checked the codes and it read that it was my can shaft sensor. Okay well I changed that. And it doing the same thing again. Someonw help me pls. Could it be my 02 sensors . What was the Pxxxx code you got?

Check the wiring going to the Camshaft sensor.

How is the engine idling?

You should start a new post, rather than resurrecting another members 9 year old post that has nothing to do with your current issue.
