2002 Pt error code P0456

My daughters PT is showing Error P0456. I checked the gas cap it's on tight. I disconnected the battery It's still on.

The car has 67,521 miles. It seem to be running just fine. There is no abnormal sounds, smells or actions.

FYI the VIN is 3c4fy48b22t304811

What suggestions do you all have to keep me from dumping a lot of money in it. I'd really like to fix this myself.

You disconnected the battery and the light stayed on when it was all back together?

Try again and keep the positive or negative cable off for about 5 minutes. That clears the computer. If the light is still on after it's back together, You might need a scanner tool from an independent mechanic or the dealer.

If it does go off, but comes on after driving (and the gas cap is secured tightly (3-5 clicks). Then a visual inspection of every vacuum hose you can see might reveal a leak somewhere.

If it comes back or stays, buy a new gas cap before you go nuts or throw serious money at it.
