my 2001 pt's oils light will come on and the valves will start to rattle and then it goes off and they stop rattling. when i got it home noticed oil on undercarrage of car but after 30 minutes of idling on jack stands still cannot see a leak. So i guess it is only leaking and losing prime when it is in a pull

Sqworley,
Welcome to the forum. Unlike just guessing at a lot of different things that it could be; You'll have to get under the car and clean as much of the undercarriage as you can before trying to find the leak. Your right about it only leaking under pressure when the cars running because if it was anything else (a hole somewhere) then the oil would be everywhere underneath and on the ground. Once you clean everything off the best you can. Then you have to run the car around for maybe a day (or less) and then look to see if you can find where the leak is. There a lot of turbulence underneath the car and will push the oil all over the place if left long enough so that's why you have to get under there and see where it's coming from before too long a time has past. P.S. The oil pump is on the bottom of the engine inside the oil pan so that couldn't case the leak.

i was suggessted to replace the oils sending unit because it may be leaking around the ring on it. It was leaking and i did replace it but after letting the car idle for 30 minutes no leaks. I drove the car down the road about 3 miles and pulled over and had a steady drip coming from between the engine and transmission area. So now i guess it is the rear main seal leaking but that does not explain the temp losing oil pressure issue. does anyone know what the easiest way is to replace the rear main seal?

if its between the tranny & motor its the rear main seal for sure , the old cars you would have to drop the tranny out not sure how intailed it is with the new cars though
