I just changed the timing belt, which was way more work than I wanted to do, and came up with three "extra" bolts. These look pretty important, but after retracing my work, I still am blind to where they go. Does anyone recognize them offhand?
4" long, with a washer on them. Threaded most of the way, with a smooth end for the last 1/2" as a pilot. The shaft is 1/4" in diameter. ![]() Thanks for any help, I have to get this job done tonight. |

Welcome to the forum.
I went threw my Haynes manual and my Parts catalog and the only bolts I can see that look somewhat like you have are in these photos (the bolts with the black heads). Neither book shows ALL the bolts that you take off to change the timing belt so it still could be others that I can't see. Good Luck. ![]()

Thanks for the quick response. I should have mentioned I have a 2001 with a 2.4L engine. That's the tensioner for the 2.0L, so I'm safe that it's not the tensioner. I checked the other ones, and they are installed. Something about the 4" length...they have to do through something pretty deep. That should be a tip off.
Thanks again, "Scratchin my head" |

That's funny because they don't even make the 2.0 in the U.S. but the Haynes manual does say they cover it. I looked all threw the pages of changing the timing belt and don't see anywhere wording as to which engine they are talking about. You know best as I'm just looking around now with 96K to have mine done, but I'll leave it to a professional. That's all I have so Good luck finding three empty holes that are looking for bolts.

Those bolts look like they are for the power steering pump. Not 100 perecnt sure but that's my educated guess. They go in from the back side of the pump.

Thanks all for the assistance...I figured it out last night.
Not the PS bolts...they are a little shorter, though they were the same diameter. These are from the timing belt cover and two of them are located behind the cam pulleys. One was from a little lower...same purpose. Holds the back side of the cover to the block. Not sure why they need to be so long, but we'll just see how it does without them. I'm not pulling that front engine support again unless I have to. What a design...Confused no more |
