Sounds like something you need to visit the dealer for or you might try a local locksmith.

Chrysler does not make a replacement ignition actuator, they want to sell the entire steering column. I found where I can buy a replacement actuator right here:
Rebuild Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge Steering Column, Repair Ignition, Replace Ignition Gear, Loose Tilt Column, Dodge Steering Column Parts: Stolen & Recovered-Steering Column and Ignition Parts and Instructions
The bottom line with this, they should have done the right thing and had a recall for this garbage.

Are you kidding? You want the PT recalled because you had a problem with the ignition switch? First of all, recalls are 99% related to parts that can fail and someone could be seriously hurt or die. I really don't think the ignition switch falls into that category. Second, if car dealers had to carry every single part that might break, can you imagine the parts inventory they would have? How many parts, broken down to the actuator of an ignition switch, do you think are in a car, 5 million, 10 ?? Name me another car on the road that if you went to the parts department and said you wanted something like that, they would go in the back and bring you a little package like: "sure we always carry that part because 1 in a million of our cars have had that problem".

Not to mention this thread started in October 2008 and your the second owner that asked about that part.

I got news for you buddy, its more than 1 in a million cars that had this problem, it is in fact a common problem with many Chrysler vehicles (I know, I did the research). And by the way it has nothing to do with the ignition switch, its the shaft on the actuator that snaps for no apparent reason. I didn't say dealers should carry every damn part that broke, but one that breaks so often should be at least available from Chrysler. Its not, you are only offered the entire steering column.Just because its not a safety issue doesn't mean they shouldn't replace obvious defective parts (like lower control arm bushings, for example).
Here is the bottom line on the PT: %#%^$#!#@$

Tbird, opinion noted and then put in the appropriate file.

No, I'm not kidding either.

Ya, well ...

I see both your points, I'd write Chrysler. It's not the mods problem, TOTALLY
understand why you're upset.

Tell Chrysler how upset you were that this broke, and while you understand
that nothing lasts forever (except the slant-6), you'd wish a common part would
be available instead of an entire piece worth almost as much as the vehicle.
Also, it's really not GREEN to manufacturer a sophisticated piece when a small
$2 part could be replaced.
Let them know that this has really stuck in your craw (I'm sure you'll find a
better phrase) and it will affect your future car buying decisions.

My neighbor bought a BRAND NEW A-4. She parks next to my $50 Neon which
has 289K miles and has never stranded me. Computer went bad coming out
of the airport, she had to have it towed.

Some girl I dated had a 325 vert (IIRC), it had a problem the shop couldn't
solve, a slow discharge. They just put a new battery in so it'd have a little
more reserve.

She was friends with the mechanics, they told her as soon as it runs out of
warrant SELL IT!!!!!!!!!

So on the other hand, you have a car that was $12-20,000 new, and those
that have $40k cars are having problems and just paying more, LOTS more!

Not to excuse the issue.

Let us know what Chrysler says.
