odell,

Don't get so excited about that Non-interference part, you still could have valve problems if the valves hit each other.

I never did the timing belt myself so I can't answer particular questions but I have seen where the A/C lines were put aside rather than taken off. Makes it harder to do the belt but can be done. Trusted mechanic at my local dealer that works on my Corvette and PT and after numerous conversations I let him do it even though the dealer hourly rate was more than the private mechanics that I had talked to.

Cryptologic Technician (CT) was my rating. Communications was my specialty. I went right into government work at NSA after a 4 year tour and completed my 21 years in the reserves. (Double dipping as they called it).

I was trained in crypto, too - there were these cards that flipped open & I'd set the switches to the day's codes and insert in the radio. Still know Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, Nancy, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, Xray, Yankee, Zulu.
I had a top secret clearance - hey, it was war, they couldn't be too choosey...
I was trained in ground radar repair, but when I got to 'Nam, the Colonel said, "I don't believe in radar", sooooooooooooo I was in an infantry unit and filled in as a radio operator and fixed radios. No equipment, so you'd take a good radio, take a part out, put it in the bad radio & try it. Called it "Easter egging"...After a while, you'd have canaballized radios with nearly all bad parts...

Thanks sir,
I went to the hobby shop today and spoke with the mechanics. They informed me of the A/C discharge that must take place. They are going to charge me 50.00 for the discharge and reinstall. I am going to take one day just for the tear down. At this point I do not have a choice but to work on it myself because we do not have the money to fix it. I am a praying man and therefore I have asked that these hands of mine be blessed. The gentlemen at the hobby shop assured me that they will assist me with the project.

I keep seeing that I need to replace the tension pully . Is it a set or just one piece of gear? I priced it today at AutoZone and it was 136.00. This included two items.

Roger,
But I guess I will not know until I replace the belt. How will I know the valve's are damaged?

Somethng to read on the tensioner:

Timing Belt Tensioner Design

Tried a search on valve bending and it seems that the only way to tell if damage was done is AFTER you get the new timing belt back on. A compression test is needed to diagnose internal damage. I could be wrong but that's what I found on a search.

My mech did a leakdown test without having replaced the belt. Manually moved the valvetrain to a position where each cylinder has all valves closed hold it fast and pressure test that cylinder via the sparkplug hole. Found no pressure held in cyl #1 and #3 held only 8 psi or something, while the other 2 were much greater. Prompted him to pull the heads and look, wham - bent valves. Not TOO bad at the head shop. Bonus is basically a top-end job.

I have a manual 2002 cruiser. I was driving a few weeks ago and the car shut off. At first I thought I ran out of gas. I put gas in the tank... still nothing. Then I thought it may have been the timing belt but that still in shape.I tried jumpstarting the car... tapping the starter ...still nothing. All the lights work radio etc. What could be?

if your asking here why send me a PM? Anyway, I gave you an answer. We need more information but you probably broke the timing belt.

So, timing belt is okay, but car won't start?
From tapping starter, I guess it isn't cranking?
You have to get it cranking - check cables to starter/grounds.
Check for 12V at starter.
