This might be of some interest. It's from PT do-it-yourself.net .........
I have a 2002 PT with 51.3k miles. As a routine service I was going to repack the rear wheel bearings at the same time I replaced the brake shoes. I found that the spindle nut does not seem to have lock tabs or double nuts like the front spindles on my race car. Is there a trick for removing the spindle nut, and are there any other surprises that I may encounter while trying to repack the bearings and replace the seals? – Bob, from Arizona. The SM indicates that the hub and bearing is designed for the life of the vehicle and requires no type of periodic maintenance. Almost all vehicles, other than pickup trucks and cargo vans above 3/4 ton, do not have bearings that can be repacked. Those days are long gone. Hub bearing assemblies are the only way they are sold.
