Default Timing Belt

I was into the dealer ship to get a new key made for the cruiser and asked the tech How much to replace the timing belt and water pump

I got a written Quote for $435.00 for parts and labor I know whrere my car is going that is cheap I had thought about doing it my self as I have done on my neons but this car looks like a real pain in the butt.. Salem motors in crookston minnesota

He did clarify a question about the engine being an interference engine that had been posted on this site..

The engine is not an interference engine meaning that the valves will not hit the pistons. However he has seen several cases where the valves hit one another so he said never let it get too far replace between 90 and 100k

$435 seem cheap to me, i'm in the process of getting quotes now for my 02pt with 95400 miles. so far i received two quotes for a timing belt change with the new version of the belt tensioner, new covers, water pump, and both outside belts, one place wants $1000.36, the other place wants $1200, these quotes were given today 11/16/08. also i was thing of installing a new clutch while they had it. clutch replacement quotes $1000 and one for $800, the place that said $800 said if i bring in my owm parts in the labor would be $236.00.

That seems really cheap to me. The other two places sound more in line to me. The cheap one sounds like parts only and no labor. The dealer is definitely going to lose money on that one. Better do it now before they figure out their mistake.

Sounds like an excellent dealer! I say go for it...they should also hav at least a 90 day warranty on their work...

$435? For that price, it's worth it to have it done. Unless you've done this many times, and have time to spare, then have it done.

Plus, if you screw up and ruin the engine, you'll be kicking yourself.

Ok I asked why so cheap he said that he wrote the quote to replace the water pump and that the job includes replacing the timing belt saving you the double billing that most shops charge you

the parts I thought were high since I can buy them wholesale but the labor was so damn cheap that I figured what the hell. He also said that there is no need to replace the tensioner unless there is a problem sombody is just trying to sell you parts. the factory water pump was $106 and the timing belt was $78 the rest was labor and shop suppiles

Hey I brought my tech the copy of the post from luvmysxs and he asked why the mechanic wanted to replace the covers? He stated that, that was a total rip off un less the cover is damaged it is a non wearable part should never have to be replaced

somebody is trying to sell you parts!!!

the cover nornally won't need replacing if i went with the old style belt tensioner, but since the tensioner being replaced with the new style tensioner then we need to replace the belt cover wih the new style also. their's a kit that includes the belt, new style tensioner and covers for this. why new style tensioner instead of replacing with the old style? well my thought is, it's only about $30 more and their must have been a reason why chrysler changed to a differant design tensioner.

chysler recommends belt changes for the 02 at 90,000 miles, for the 01 chysler recommends belt change at 120,000 miles, for the 03-04 chyster says 105,000 miles.
