Engine Light Stays On - OBD

Hi,

I looked under obd, obd2, obd ii, engine light, etc and didn't see anything about the on board diagnostic thingy.
Two days ago, I had the oil changed. It seems that shortly thereafter, the engine light came on. It doesn't go off now after a few seconds and is on all the time. I checked to make sure the oil cap was on correctly and then checked everything else that had to do with caps being tightened.
I read something at a site that says you can turn the car on, then off, then on, then off, then back on and it will show you an error code or the word 'done', somewhere near the engine light. Is this true because I couldn't get it to work.
This is not my field but I do understand basics. I just wanted to check with you cruisers before I go to the dealership on Friday. Even if they find nothing, it's going to cost $85.
I have a 2007 automatic with 26K miles. Everything works well...except for the light being on. Also, it's the first time this happened. I want to link the oil change and the engine light but I need your help.

Vince, if I understand your post, you are starting the car and shutting it off. That is incorrect, you just turn the key to "start" without starting. Key turned to start and back to "acc" 3 times quickly and leave the key in the start position, that should either throw a code or "DONE" when you are finished.

If and when you find a code you can google "Chrysler code (insert your code here). That should get you in the ballpark. Good Luck

As Hooligan mentioned (quickly) turning the key on/off 3 times must be done within 5 seconds so don't hesitate when doing the turning.

The word "done" only comes on when there's no code. Since you are showing the engine light, there should be some sort of code that pops up; example P0143.

An AdvanceAuto and other such auto stores will plug in a reader and read it for free if you can't get the "key dance" down....

First thanks for the key trick, the 5 sec was especially helpful. OK Had oil changed 3 days prior to this happening.

2006 PT touring

Engine light came on
tried key trick no code but said "done"
After that engine light was not on anymore, should I been concerned or have it check. First thought was maybe had not been reset for oil during recent oil changes (2 oil changes since I've had it). Is this a usual thing??

Personally, I'd leave it alone. If your not having any problems, and the code says "done", why pay the diagnostic fee for the dealer to say nothings wrong?

One more thing to try.
If you get "done" after trying to pop a code; and that "check engine" still bothers you.....try disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds or so....and then reconnecting. This will let the computer reset itself.
