Hi! I'm new around here, I'm that car-savvy, and just need a little advice.
My father gave me a 2001 PT Cruiser. It's a beauty. When I got it, the 442 error code came up. I replaced the gas cap, but it still came up. I took it to a mechanic, who also just told me it was the gas cap. It wasn't, of course - it was the filler neck. After two long weeks of running back and forth to his shop, he replaced the filler neck. However, now everytime I go to get gas, the pump does that "popping" thing to say that the tank is full...but it's not. I ran the car down to E, went to fill it, and it still did it. Is this a problem he caused, or just a kink that needs to be worked out with the new filler neck? Thanks! |

I have a 2001 since August 2000 and it's been doing that since new. Only if I go extremely slow while filling, or just keep putting gas in when it cuts off do I get it completely full. I did notice that certain pumps at particular stations are worse than others. Putting the pump handle further in or out doesn't seem to help either. Waiting a second so the gas settles and fumes dissipate when it clicks off does seem to help a little.

I've had problems with that code on my 03 GT Cruiser. The first time, a couple of years ago, I replaced the gas cap for a cure. A couple of months ago the same code came up again. This time instead of replacing the cap, I greased the cap threads and filler neck seal with silicone grease which fixed the problem.

442 error code likely means one or more problem, such as a loose or improperly affixed gas cap, a small leak or hole in the fuel vapor hose or tube, leak in the evap system and a faulty fuel filler neck. the basic repair is to remove the gas cap, clear the codes and drive for a day. see if the code comes back.

A blocked or pinched off vent tube will cause the fueling problem, it can also cause the P0442 code on some of the Chrysler vehicles.... WHY? I don't know. It's run me around a couple of times.
