How long has someone driven a base pt cruiser before preplacing the timing belt?

Fortunately the 2.4 engine is basically crash proof when a timing belt snaps.
The valves don't crash into the piston. We always advised our customers to follow the manufacturers recommendation. We rarely saw a belt break (usually sheared cogs) within the recommended change mileage. However we have seen many people having a disaster by trying to extend the change period. In one case, a customer brought in his car for repair with mileage beyond the recommended belt change. The customer said he never had the belt changed, but refused our recommendation. He got less than five miles from the shop and the belt failed. Naturally he accused us of tampering with his car. The service business is a tough business. |
