Default What cost timing belt?

I have an 01 PT with a little over 100,000 miles and it still runs pretty well! The dealer nearby suggested it was time to replace the timing belt, along with the water pump and idler. Seemed like a good idea. But he's asking about $1500.00 or more for the job. This seems a bit high to me. . . but I'm older and everything seems expensive anymore! I live in way south New Jersey near Cape May. Is this a fair price? Does anyone have a suggestion for a mechanic who I can trust nearby? Thanks for the help/

Break down your estimate....

What is the labor rate in your area and how many hours are quoted?

What is the cost of parts?

What is disposal cost (EPA)?

What are taxes on your estimate?

Most of these items are locale driven. An estimated repair in your community would be much different that the same repair in my northwest, small town, with lower costs and wage scales.

bout the cheapest I have see was like $1000 for the same work and as much as I usally work on my own cars this seems to be a big pain to do

Oh and i am guessing the high cost is the labor as the parts will or should be under $300

I just had my timing belt changed for $856.00. This included the belt, water pump and labor. I had it done at a Chrylser dealership. I called several other dealerships and they came in arount the same price. I also called the local shop where I have most of the simple maintenace done, and their price was $1050.00.

I would not wait too much longer to have the belt repalced. The limited reseach that I found is that the amount of miles and time exposed to the engine heat contribute to the belt breaking. many of the new manuals suggest 102,000 miles or 72 months as the time to have the belt repalced. Good luck.

i can tell you first hand repair pay is not even close on being arcuate in the cost of a timing belt replacement, repair pal says $359-570, i received 3 quotes out of 5 repair shops, 2 didn't want the job, one was $1020, second was $1025, the third was for $1200. i went to the one that quoted $1020, he ended up charging me $950 because he didn't need to remove the a/c

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback. If you look up both timing belt and water pump on RepairPal, it is a lot closer to the prices you are seeing at your local repair shops. For Cape May, NJ here are the prices:

Timing Belt Replacement: $402 - $625
Water Pump Replacement: $544 - $708
Total: $946 - $1133

We know there is some overlap in the labor when doing these jobs and we are working on enhancing our estimates to take that into account. Again, thank you for the feedback and for checking out RepairPal.
