Most likely the multifunction switch died. Not all of it has to die.
Do check fuses - panel underhood above/behind the air intake - but I'll be the switch.

For the 01-05 cruisers, the headlamps each have their own fuse. The #19 and #20 10amp fuses in the fuse box that's located by your left knee when sitting in the driver seat.

Don't think both fuses would blow at the same time so your problem may just be as QSD suggested ....the multifunction stalk. The stalk works the turn signals, headlights and fog lights. The interior of the stalk uses very cheap, flimsy parts and they can burn out or melt together shown to us by the forums Certified Master Mechanic (MX-5).

thanks for that.
and as is always the case with cruiser parts - even though they are made from cheap flimsy materials - cost of replacements is... i'll bet.

beanpt and martyb125 do you have fog lights on your PT and do you use them? The fog lights put a big load on the MFS.

i have actually had to use my fog lights a couple of times over the last few weeks. yesterday i had to use them just to get home after they headlamps went out, within about 20 minutes of each other.
so your reckoning its the MFS?

again guys, thanks a whole bunch - i am so glad i found this site, it has been invaluable.

Don't forget, we're only guessing at this point but most of the problems with lights do turn out to be from the multi-function stalk. Don't forget to check the fuses.

The multifunction switch isn't that bad. Somewhere in the range of $75. If you buy one, make sure you get the one that is made for fog lights (if you have the OEM lights). It is made differently. The stalk is replaced easily and can save a bunch on labor charges. One small piece from the old stalk is saved and placed on the new stalk. a couple of wire clips, some screws to work with, panel to replace and your done.

I bought a MF switch online for my daughter's GT - with fogs - there are separate ones w or w/o fogs - and was about $75. Tokk 15 minutes to change. Hardest part is the connector.
