If that is the case then more likely you have a bad ring. Burned valves are not common but does happen occasionally. Typically it's because of extended low rpm operation. Best thing you can do is atleast once a week, drive it like ya stole it. Take it to a shop that you trust and have them do a leak down test. Or if you have the tools then put air pressure in the cylinder and see where it's leaking at. If you hear it in the exhaust then it's a valve. If you take the oil filler cap off and hear it and or feel it then it's rings. You may have to hold the crank still to do it.

can anyone offer input on how complex it is to pull the head on my 07. i think i could do it, i have several years experience in auto work. but it is limited to older v-8's the most experience i have had with a FWD is a head gasket on a pontiac quad 4. the thing that worries me is if it turns into a ring, i am not equipped with a lift to safely pull the cradle.........thanks

According to my manual, the oil pan is not to hard.

1. Remove the oil filter adapter from the oil pan.

2. Remove the structural collar.

3. Remove the lateral bending brace

There's 11 lines of instructions for the cylinder head but it's mostly removing upper manifold, coil, plugs, valve cover, timing belt. Draining the cooling system.

Removing the exhaust manifold can be done before or after the cylinder head is removed depending on model.

There's a special un-tightening sequence for the head bolts and of course the reverse when putting it back together.

hi crewzin. thanks for the new info. i am thinking more and more about doing this job.thats what happens when you owe too much on it to be able to trade it off, and cant afford to pay someone to do it. but first i am going to find someone to do a leakdown test. hopefully it will point to a bad valve. then i am going to find me a repair manual and start buying gaskets and such.

If you are the original owner you may powertrain warranty that will take care of this. Of if when you bought it you had the powertrain transfered then you are in luck.

Talking time is over. Lift the head and see what condition the system is in.

If the pressure builds when the cylinder is wet--I am not leaning toward the valves--I am looking at the rings and condition of the cylinder wall. Could it be a valve issue--maybe--You just have to break it open and get on with a good dianosis and then perform the appropriate repair.

Bad piston rings is the likely culprit if adding oil helps.
