well i didnt do the leakdown test today.i went to the dealer to see about goodwill repair, and wouldnt you know it, the service manager wont be in till monday.but the service adviser seems to think that more than likely he will get it done for me.i kind of threw a couple of things out at the general manager while i was there.like i dont have extended warranty because the salesman told me to decline it, because its not worth it. and about them sneaking in a $199.95 charge for etching my vin on the windows, which they didnt do. so i guess ill wait till monday to see what the service manager says.

That was really piss poor advise from the salesman! That's why I tell anybody who asks me that you ALWAYS need to buy an extended warranty on ANY car that you buy. Best advise is to get the original manufacturers extended warranty. Buy the highest level you can afford. YOU WILL use it eventually and if nothing else you get a rental when you get it serviced! I have the Chrysler Maxcare $0 deductible extended warranty. So far I have had a rental 3 times for a total of 3 weeks and it cost me zero! And I work on the silly things! ALWAYS get the extended warranty!

Where in your universe does buying from a dealership and getting sold a bill of goods have in absloute common?

If that "salesman" worked at my dealership and recommended to any customer to declline the "service contract" because it is worthless; that "salesman" would be seeking new employment. The markup on a service contract is 100%. You pay $2000.00--Chrysler and the Dealership split the difference--if the dealership participates in a discount--Chrysler still gets $1000 and the dealership gets the remainder. It also ensures a long term relationship with a dealership, if not the selling dealership, for Chrysler.

It is a law that each and every customer must be offered the "service contract" if one is avaialable from the manufacturer if it is available and if they decline it. They must sign a form indicating in writing that they are chosing to do so of their own free will. Third party service contracts are definitely not as good as the manufacturers contract but are better than nothing-

You are an educated, eperinced automotive consumer. You made the decision the decline the "service contract" as do the vast number of automobile purchasers--many, many on the recomendation of "Consumer Union", the publishers of "Consumer Reports". Consumer reports thinks that all service contract are worthless--of course they rarely find any thing favorable to say about anything that is not Nipponese in origion.

The 7/70 power train warranty applies only to the first owner--being a rental has nothing to do with it. Except in the early years when it could be transfered once for a fee of, I believe, $150.00.

As your monkier implies, you are smarter with automobiles than the average customer......you know vehicles fail. You know what it cost to repair them and why.

Let's get on with the repair effort.

you say that i am a educated, experienced automotive consumer.and i made the decision to decline the coverage. as a matter of fact although i was 35 years old when i bought the car, it was the first time that i had ever bought from a large dealer, and the first time i ever bought a automobile that had ANY kind of warranty.so yes the saleman steered me the wrong direction. but we all make mistakes.

and yes i know what it cost to repair them............."lets get on with the repair" do you not happen to think that if i had the money for repairs that i wouldnt be on here trying to find info on doing the repairs myself ? if i had the $1500 i darn sure wouldnt be trying to ask the dealer for goodwill help.

If the salesperson is still employed at the dealership--get the service manager and the sales manager both involved in a conservation with the salesperson in the general managers office. You may be able to bring some leverage into the situtation as the salesperson has alread cost the dealership a revenue stream. The General Manager cares less who pays for the repair as long as someone pays. That sales person may have a record of less that upfront dealings that can sway things to your advantage.

Recommed keeping it very calm and factual. Empty threats usually do not work.

As to my comments--as "greasemonkey" it appeared that you are more experienced as the name indiactes--that I truly regret.

There is a grand mix of experience and socio-economic layers on this forum--all are here for the same reason--we like, some love, our PT's and want to help.

Some of us even work(ed) in the auto repair industry and are a bit thinned skinned when we are impuned just for our choice of employment.

We, the fourm, still need to and will help as best we can with your repair effort.

Yes it does make a difference. Rental cars are considered fleet vehicles and are not eligible for powertrain warranty.

thanks for the update. I thought that when the rental companies threathened to stop purchasing Chrysler vehicles in approx 2003/04 due to the restriction of waranty on canadian rentals imported into the USA, chrysler had also releneted on the fleet restriction.

It sure would be nice to have an updated warranty administration maual so we coiuld get the current skinny.

Keep us honest!

hi folks, since you all were helping me on my problem,i figured i owed you a update.at the present time, the pt is in the dealer shop with the head off of it. they called me and said they want to replace the head, 4 valves, the water pump, and timing belt. they are figuring in 14 hours labor, at $85 an hour, to do it all, including the diagnostic on it before they tore it down. now the good news. the service manager said chrysler will cover all parts, and all but 5 hours labor. so i should get it fixed in the $500 range which is something ill gladly live with. especially since ill have a lot of miles to go again, before a belt and pump change.

Good News--Did the shop indicate the cause of the failure?

More Good News--since you are participaing in the cost of the repair--you get the full waranty on the repair--that is compared to if Chrysler paid for all of it you would be without warranty. That is something that is spelled out in the warranty administration manual. The least you are going to get is 12/12,000.
