This morning my pt started screaming like a banshee....I dropped it off at the dealer and was told that my serpentine belt needs to be replaced because i have a leak coming from the thermostat housing..which dripped down to the belt and damaged it. My estimate was $$420.00 for the serpentine belt, Thermostat, Thermostat Housing/cooler outlet, thermostat cap. One of the techs there told me i can do most of the stuff myself...so I am, Im taking the day off tomorrow.. I found all of the parts for under $$70.00...My only question is which serpentine belt do i get?
While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

I went on-line to Rock Auto, they have the same pull down menu as your site. I got the timing belt kit, water pump, tensioner, serpentine and alternator belts. I went with the DAYCO belts.
The choice is really up to you. The number for my 2001 belt is a little different that what your site has: #5040560 where yours is $5040550.

I just finished the job. I'm not sure if i will ever take my Cruiser to the dealer again.
It took me longer to remove all of the plastic around the wheel than it did to change the belt. The thermostat housing was not cracked like the dealer said. Since i already had the parts i replaced thermostat housing, thermostat and the cap. While i was there i replaced my plugs, wires, oil filter, and went full synthetic. Took it for a 40 mile test drive.....and it's running like a champ.![]() Thanks for all the help & advice from everyone.

The question is: if the thermostat housing wasn't leaking onto the serpentine belt, what did damage the belt and make it scream (slip)????
Make sure you dry everything off really good and try to keep an eye out for anything that could damage the belt.

There was a leak coming from the neck of the housing. I'm guessing it was the thermostat seal that was out. Even if i ran it for 5 minutes it would start leaking and after a few minutes it would squeal. After i replaced everything and dried it all off..it fine. I was able to smell the antifreeze burning before. The belt still looked good, no cracks or anything on it, it was just wet from the antifreeze. Since i purchased the belt and it only cost me around $12 i replaced it anyway. Heck i had it up on the jack and dissasembled already. I will keep a eye on everything even though i took it for a 40 mile run...just in case.
