0340 code - just changed out the sensor in our 2002 PT. Read it with a scangauge 2. Works great now. By the way - you can re-set the code with the ScanGauge, but the check engine light won't go out until you have driven the car for 3 drive cycles, and it doesn't see the code. Then the computer will turn off the check engine light. The sensor is a piece of cake to replace. Take out the air filter and housing and there it is. Just don't over tighten the bolts or you can crack the magnet on the end of the cam shaft and have to replace it too..

I have a 2006 as well that is lurching. I'm pretty sure I've got a slow oil leak from the sensor too is that possible anyone that could help I would greatly appreciate it. It leaks out then hits the hot engine and burns causing a fume and cloud of smoke. Does this sound like anything anyone else has ran into?

Default P0340 CMP Sensor - Should I change the Target Magnet Also?

There is also a "CMP sensor target magnet" bolted on the end of the camshaft. Has anyone replaced this at the same time as the CMP sensor? My thought is that there are three potential causes: (1) bad sensor, (2) bad magnet - possibly caused by an engine that runs slightly hot - my low-speed fan died and we've been driving it for a long time w/o it - engine does not overheat, but I'm sure it runs hotter than it should, or (3) the air gap between the sensor and the magnet. I haven't priced the target magnet yet, but am thinking that it might be cheap insurance.

Any thoughts or comments?

Well, of the hundreds that have had problems with the Camshaft sensor, that bought a new one (not after market) and it fixed the problem they were having, you are the first to mention anything about the magnet.
