2002 PT died on me...HELP

I have been driving my daughters 2002 PT Cruiser and as I was driving the oil light came on. Stopped & got a quart & put it in. As I checked the dipstick it was clean...no oil at all. I then got back in the car to go home, It hesitated for a brief moment then acted like I was losing power. As I went down a hill it died on me...shut down completely. I pulled off the road & it didn't want to start up again. It was making a high whinning sound.
Now, a couple months ago, she took it in to get the oil changed and they told her that there was no oil in it. She should have checked to see why there was no oil...i know. So what is my husband looking at here job wise & price? Thanks!

Not much to go on. The question is - where did the oil go? How many miles on it?

You wrote, "It was making a high whinning sound". If you are referring to a whurring noise as the starter cranks the engine, like the engine is turning too fast, it could possibly indicate a defective timing belt.

Where did the oil go.........we do not know. She did have the timing belt changed twice already. She is going to sell the car as is to a dealer for another car. They are willing to pay her $2500 for it. So thanks for the help.

So you didn't see any oil on the dipstick and continued to drive it? Not real smart.
