Default Buying a code reader - which one?

What is a good code reader that will allow me to check codes on my 2003 PT before taking it to mechanics? I'm interested in specific models that someone here is using successfully with PTs to get as detailed codes as possible - not just general brands or types. There are so many available!

I realize you can't get all codes, but I'm hoping for something that will get as much detail as possible for a home user.

thx

Don't know, but you can take it to AdvanceAuto, or places like that, and they read codes for free....

Thanks, I have used AutoZone before and they are helpful. I want to buy one, though.

Inexpensive code readers will not access the transmission, ABS, airbag, body control, instrument cluster, of theft systems. All they do is read engine codes. That seems a waste to only get engine codes, when there are hundreds of faults they cannot read.
A P0700 generic transmission code can be read, but it will not let you read the actual trans fault.
You need a real diagnostic scanner if you want to know what circuit is failing.

For Chrysler brands, I use a DRB-III scanner as well as an OTC Genisys for backup.

The generic engine codes can be read without a code reader. They will show on the odometer.

Your Cruiser has a built in diagnostic code reader. It is as good as any inexpensive code reader. See Club Archives for detail of codes and procedures.
Unless you plan on doing extensive do-it-yourself repairs that extend beyond engine trouble codes, save your money.
