Default Low Oil Pressure at idle

Hi guys,

I have a 2004 Pt Curiser Turbo (non-GT) automatic with about 77k miles, I'm not the original owner but it has been well maintained for about 40k miles or so. Just last week my oil pressure light starting coming on intermittently while idling in some stop and go traffic. I drove the car home let it cool down and it didn't happen for a couple of more days so I thought it might be a fluke or a sensor. It came on twice again (only at idle) during the last few days. I just had an oil change with 10w30 as well but it's still happening.

After doing a search on the forums I found that it might be my oil pressure sending unit, can you guys think of anything else causing it? Note: the car does not leak any oil and never has.

Also if it is the sending unit, is it essential to get it replaced? (does my car really have low oil pressure or is the sending unit reading it wrong causing the light to come on?) Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's not essential to have it replaced but you really don't want to just "leave it" because low oil pressure is bad for your engine.

I found this on a Google search .......

thanks for the link that's exactly what's happening. But again, does my car really have low oil pressure? Or is the sending unit reading it wrong.

Like the answer said: an oil pressure guage can be added to where the sender is to see what pressure you really have, or just replace the sender and see if the light goes out.

well id have to say that IS THE REASON TO HAVE IT REPLACED that way you will know???? 77,000 isnt that many miles for it to lose oil pressure I actually would love to have a "REAL" gauge on mine as well as a temp gauge

thanks guys, looks like it's only $20 from autozone, won't be too much trouble to replace.

I hope you have the special deepwell socket to change it and it is a lot easier to change on a lift.
