Chuck,

If I remember years back when I used to shift gears, first and reverse are the same gear and that's why they are both failing. Something might have changed in all those years though. Changing the gear oil might make a difference, but I doubt it. It can't hurt to try and it is a lot less expensive than having the tranny rebuilt. Why not take it to a transmission shop and have them give you an opinion of what it might be and what it would cost. The dealer wolud just replace it without probably even looking at it.

First thing you need to check is the bushings at the transmission side of the cables. If those are good then you probably have a synchro going out. New fluid might help. Check your owners manual to see if it takes ATF 4 or a special fluid, I can't remember which.
As far as is it worth it? Do you plan on keeping the car for another 60k or are yuo going to get rid of it soon? Buying a new car entails a payment but if you buy a new Chrysler you get lifetime warranty.... I can make the argument either way. Which way do you want me to convince you?
