Default My First Major Repair

Well, I have now experienced my 1st major repair for my PT. I noticed a few drops of oil in my driveway last week. Took the car into the shop to have it checked, hoping it was just a loose oil drain plug or oil filter. WRONG! The rear main seal was leaking the oil.Told them to go ahead and get the part and replace. Got a call the next morning and they had also found the drain plug threads on the drain pan were badly worn and it was a 50/50 shot as to if it would leak after putting all back together. I told them to get the replacement oil pan and gasket and replace. The had the car 4 days and I finally got it back Tuesday night. Being the "just to be sure" type of guy I am, I placed cardboard under the car to confirm that there was no oil leaking. So far, 2 nights and no leaks. It set us back almost $500.00, mostly being labor charges.

John,

Sorry to hear about that. If it is your first, that's not bad for as long as you've had it,but yo cold have saved some cash because of the alternative ways of fixing the drain plug. Replacing the whole pan was a bit overkill but I'm sure the dealer recommended it. If your happy with the results, that's what counts.

Wasn't the drain plug itself, but rather the drain pan threaded hole for the plug. There were hardly and threads left.

Right John, but there are kits that thread a new hole and you get a new oversize plug. Dealers, of course, don't like to do things like that if they can sell you a new pan. Anyway, you got all new parts and should last a long time, if your keeping the PT. Find any kind of club or gathering in the area yet. I see lots of PT's around when I visit my son, you just have to get them all together.

I guess all new is good since I plan on keeping until the wheels fall off. No, have founf no close activities related to PT's. During the summer months, I do go over to Chester for a cruise-in on Saturday nights. Usually stay 2-3 hours.

$500 sounds cheap for that much work at a dealership.
