Hi there, I really don't know much about cars and I was just wondering if anyone could help me figure out what's going on with my PT?
I went out to the car this morning to go to work and I tried to shift it down to Drive and I felt ALOT of resistance and it would only go as far as Neutral, it would run in reverse just fine. So I tried once more and I heard a pop, and I could put it in park, but it would just loosely slide throug the rest of the gears. So I kinda freaked out and just left it in the driveway and caught a cab. Anyway, anyone know what is going on? Thank you and I appreciate it! ![]() |

I have the exact same problem, and I have a trusted mechanic. Problem is that he's not a transmission specialist. Does he need to be to fix this problem? Is there more information about this problem that I could give him? Thanks.

He could check it out and diagnose the problem. You then could decide to allow him to do the work or take it to a tranny shop. He should know if he is capable to do the work or not.

I think the problem is external to the transmission - so mechanic should be able to handle it.

I changed mine myself. You have to take out the center console, but that is easy. It does take a little time though. The cable was $80 at dealer if not mistaken...

four crews two on the front where the cupholders are and two on the back one on each side of the cupholder. Both seats reclined all thet way to the back and parking brake as far up as it will go.

I have a similar problem and am hoping that someone can give me some advice.
The other night my son was driving his 2005 PT up a hill at about 10 mph with the trans in Drive when it seemed to "pop out". None of the gears will engage now, not even the "limp home" reverse and 2nd gear. Following some advice from this site, we replaced the trans fluid filter. The old fluid was a nice red color, for what it's worth. But we are still in the same boat. I am going to check the shift linkage. Does it make any sense that if that broke it would get kicked out of gear? It seems to me that it would stay in drive. But we were on a bumpy gravel road... Thanks in advance for your advice on this problem. That old car is not worth a new transmission so I really hope it's not that big a problem. |
