Default Possible Transmission Problems

I have a 2002 LE, Automatic PT Cruiser with 92,000 miles. I was driving home from work today when I started to notice a odd kind of high pitch noise coming from my engine when I got above 3 RPM's... when I got off the freeway and was driving slower it didn't make the noise until I pressed on the gas harder. Then my car started to kind of sputter and jerk inbetween gears... and it started making the odd high pitch noise all the time... I called around an one mechanic said it may be my transmission fluid pump? If so can they just replace the pump or would they have to rebuild the whole transmission? How much am I looking at here...I have no clue what the problem could be any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Nobody can really tell you how much it might be until it's diagnosed, not just someone taking a guess. Did you ever flush the transaxle? Not just change the filter which only get 4 quarts of fluid changed, but flushed all 14-16 quarts out, cleaned and re-filled with ATF+4. The tranny is a weak link in the drive train, been that way ever since Chrysler started using the same one in the minivan. $150 bill for flushing it back around 50,000 liles could save you $1500 now.
