Had a problem with hard shifting, was very difficult to go between gears. Found one of the shifter cable bushings was bad, replaced it. Still hard to shift. Then started having a problem feeling like the clutch "Slipping". Took it to a mechanic - he took it all apart and said the clutch is fine, in nearly new condition. Slave Cylinder was shot though, it was actuating but not releasing so he replaced that.
It's still "slipping" though - you can put the car in 2nd gear at a stop, and pop out the clutch, and it won't stall. Cruising along in 3rd gear at 30mph, hit the gas, and the RPM's rev high and it takes like 3-4 seconds to "Catch up" and actually get the car moving. Guy who worked on it thinks it may be a syncro problem. Anyone have any input? |

Negative. The slipping is either a problem with the clutch material or the hydraulics. Could also be a throwout bearing or arm sticking. Could also explain the hard shifting. Synchro's will cause shifting problems but I don't see very problems with them very often....

i don't know if this makes a difference, but the hard shifting exists even with the car powered off. most cars i've been in, you can shift between gears very easily with the engine off but you still have to almost force the shifter into place especially going into 1st.

I guess you could have two separate problems acting together. Their is nothing in a manual transmission that will allow slipping. When in gear, whether it is 1st, 5th or in between or even reverse, you have metal teeth against metal teeth. The syncro's help align the gears as you go from one to another set but once engaged, their is nothing to slip.
If something is slipping, it has to be related to the clutch assembly. Basically it is two plates held together by very tight springs. If it is not adjusted correctly and not allowing the pressure plate to exert full force on the clutch disc, you'll get slippage possibly only noticeable under hard acceleration. I'd take it back to the mechanic and ask him to readjust the linkage. I'll bet it's set to tight and not letting the clutch fully engage.
