Hi Everyone,
My 2001 PT (apprx. 63,000 miles) has started to surge when stopped at traffic lights or stop signs. It idles high and rough, also. When I start the car first thing in the morning, it sounds like I'm ready to race at Nascar! The malfunction indicator light comes on and stays on - does not blink. This started last Thursday - My husband has been driving it to work since he can take it up to speeds higher than my commute can. We thought initially it was bad gasoline or condensation in the tank so we put a fuel cleaner into the gas tank. We have also just replaced the gas cap but haven't tried to drive it yet. Any ideas? |

Sue, Welcome to the forum.
If the malfunction indicator light is on, your computer has set a code letting us help you diagnose the problem. If your not familiar with the "key trick" to find the computer fault code, take it to an brand name auto store (Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto) and have them read the codes for you (free) and come back here with the code. There are many things like the EGR system, 02 sensors, vacuum leak and the Idle Air Controller that can cause your symptoms so we need the code to track it down.

Thanks for the heads up on the codes - my husband will take it to the AutoZone tomorrow. I'll post the code tomorrow evening!

Hi Again,
As promised, my husband just did the key trick on my 2001 PT and this is the code he got back -1294. He then looked at the code meanings and found this: Can't get to target engine speed, check for vacuum leaks and idle speed motor issues. Sounds like I need to take it to the dealer to fix....Any comments?

Sue. Before doing that have hubby check around really good for any possible vacuum leaks. Listen real hard with engine at idle and while revving it up. Sounds to me like that's all there is wrong. Make sure all the connections to sensors in the intake are tight.

Hey,
Just wanted to let you all know that a hose did come loose - I guess a clamp had broken off. Anyway, we had the hose and clamp replaced! So glad it wasn't anything worse! Thanks for all your help and advice!!! ![]() Sue |
