Welcome to the forum. Without a fault code to steer us in the right direction, we can only take a wide guess at what's wrong. You can also get the codes by yourself without the use of your code reader.

Instructions:

Sitting in the drivers seat. Turn the key ON and OFF 3 times with the last time leaving the key pointing towards the windshield.

Turning the key has to be done within 5 seconds. Do NOT start the engine, just turn the key till the instrument light come on.

So that's : ON - OFF, ON - OFF, ON.

IN the space with the odometer is (if you did it right) the code(s) should show up. Example P0070 or P0430. Write the codes down and come back here.

Here's another thread we just had on the same subject: (and with the same name)

Rough idle - dies.

ok I could not get it to read a code how hard is it to get to the ac idle control switch to clean it the check engine lite goes off and on when you are driving it. I can't figure out why my code reader will not pick it up just read's err.

Ok I did the on off 5 time's but could not get any thing to come up the check engine lite will come on and off as you are driving. It seem's to run worse with the AC on. would the IAC be the problem and how hard would it be to replace? Also when I tried the on off the check engine lite was not on. The car only has 34000 mile's on it. Would bad gas possiblily be the problem I just filled it up today?

I'm not sure about the "ac idle control switch" but the IAC (Idle Air Controller) is attached to the back side of the throttle body and it's easy to take off (2 twist knobs). I never did it myself, but I'm told you can clean and replace it or easily replace it.

The ON-OFF trick only works when you do it 3 times in a 5 second period. Doesn't matter if the engine light is on as the codes are stored inside the computer once that engine light comes on. Don't think bad gas would do anything but make it run ruff all the time but not closing the gas cap properly will cause the engine light to come on and it takes a day or so to go off once the cap is secuerly tightened (3 full turns closed).

NO. Well, just have to start with the basic questions: How many miles, when was the last time you changed the plugs and plug wires?

2800 changed to E3 spark plug's did not change wire's. Oil changed every 3000 mile's it act's like fouled plug's I guess it would not hurt to look at them but if it was fouled plug's it would not happen all at once. Has anyone used E3 plug's before?
