Something fell off the front right wheel area

Unknown object fell off my front right wheel area yesterday. Just before it came off there was a loud thumpping noise but not sure of the source, crossed railroad tracks then it fell off. I was only driving 25 miles per hour. When I checked the situation out it looked like something had rubbed against the inner fender well but everything looked like it was still in tact. Then I got up this a.m. had a flat. What ever it was, caused a gash on the inner side of the tire. Any idea what it could have been ? Bought a new tire- Mechanics there didn't know what it was either. I have searched the free repair manual that "sticky" posted with no luck. Thanks "sticky"! I did find it useful though.

Have a mechanic check out the suspension, like bushings on the control arms.
Could have been that you actually hit a foreign object in the tracks/crossing grooves. Maybe even running over a rail joint popped a rail spike up in the air!
Could be the tire received all the damage!

Agree. If something fell off, it should be apparent, both visually and when driving.
You should have it looked at - what if it damaged a brake line?

Were you able to stop and check for the object on the track? That way both you and the rest us would know.
