Default Check Engine Light - Help!

Hi guys,

I have an 04 Pt Cruiser 2.4L Turbo (low output) with 81K miles on it and just got my first check engine light. I had it diagnosed and the code is P0572 BRAKE SWITCH #1 CIRCUIT LOW. Anyone know what this means or how to fix it? I'm hoping it's something minor like a fuse or something. Any input on this would be great. Thanks.

Lets cover the easy stuff:

Brake fluid - is it full?
Brake pads - are they are in decent shape or worn?

Brake Fluid is full. Pads I had changed out about 10,000 miles for the front and 15,000 miles for the back. I mostly freeway drive (light traffic) so I'm assuming they're still in pretty good shape.

Did a search and found ...

PT Cruiser: P0572 Low Voltage Detected at the Brake Switch

Trouble Code: P0572

Brake Switch Signal No. 1 Circuit Low

Trouble Code Conditions:Ignition is on. When PCM recognizes that brake switch is mechanically stuck in the low/on position, a DTC will set. Three global good trips are necessary to turn off MIL.

Possible Causes:

* Brake switch signal circuit is shorted to ground
* BS No. 2 signal open
* Brake switch is damaged or has failed
* PCM has failed

Cool just doing the "Damn I didn't think of that!" It happens a lot with CEL's or the ABS light..

Crewzin has you covered

And it might just go off anyway. Try undoing the neg battery connection and see if that clears the light. My check eng light was on and off for 20,00 miles and now is off all of the time after I had the timing belt done, which probably has nothing to do with the light. See if it will go off and stay off for a while befor you really worry. It could even be that you need a new gas cap, because a bad cap will turn the light on. But maybe???

Thank you everyone for the advice! Crewzin where did you find this info? I did a google search and searched this board and couldn't find anything. It's probably one of the first three since I'd know if my PCM failed.

Anyone know where the brake switch is located? Expensive to replace, etc. And yes White I did have Pep Boys clear the code and the check engine light came back on about two days later with the same code, hopefully it's not too expensive to fix/repair

Look under the dash by the top of the brake pedal. It's a square white box. Haven't changed it myself but doesn't look too hard to replace.

I have the same problem. My oil light comes on and goes off. my check engine light came on a couple weeks ago and will not go off.. every now and then it will blink then beep. then it stays on. I haven't tried disconnecting the battery yet. I just bought it in June, used. its a 2007 model on driven in Los Angeles.
