Beyond the P0700 code

My 2001 PT Cruiser w/ auto has the following:

P1684 Driver 5 Line 4

P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction

In searching other posts I see this has happened to other owners. Is there such a thing as a common problem, or typical failure that sends off this code. I am on a limited budget and the local dealer wants $145 to run and breakdown the code.

I usually try to fix things myself. Locking an owner into a forced dealer visit isn't nice! Thanks in advance for any feedback. I search prior posts, and could not come up with any consensus other than transmission problems somewhere..

Why go to a dealer?
Why not a qualified/trained/certified independant repair shop?

As a shop owner, I have the same Chrysler scan tools and repair information as a dealership. My cost for the same testing you were quoted $145 is $47.38.

Great PT Forum. I did search for most of what Crewzin provided regarding Error Codes before I posted my questions.

And thanks for the heads-ups on the private repairs shops.

Just around the corner Kelly’s Auto in Costa Mesa ran the tests for $70.00 with repair credit going toward parts.

A further diagnosis with the computer was showing a P0605.

Basically the TCM took a dump and needs to be replaced. Thank god the tranny is still sound. It was replaced at 64K, and we now have 110,500. I should be back on the road for under $500.00.

Now if I can just stop that squeaking in the belt area!
