Are you loosing water at all, a blown head gasket will do that and cause overheating.

Since your at 120K, was the major service to the timing belt and water pump and tensioner done?
The timing belt and water pump were replaced last year at about 95,000 miles

Me? Why do you ask?

It's a 2001, born on date of September 2000. 94K on the odometer right now. Replacing the fan, repaired the Camshaft wiring harness and replaced the power steering pump were the only major repairs. About to do the timing belt, water pump and tensioner at 100K.

I was just wondering if this tends to be a problem with the cruiser. At least you have less miles then me. I purchase mine in October of 2000

I have three cars, otherwise the miles on the PT would be nearing 200,000. The overheating is a problem with PT's for some reason according to all the threads I'm seeing on this and other PT forums. All the parts that could cause overheating seem to go bad at one time or another but I'd say the fan motor is probably the worst of the lot.

2007 PT Cruiser I bought last October with 27,000 miles on it. It overheated in winter time, on the highway. Stopped and added a little coolant. It happened again, in August 2008. Same thing, very little loss of coolant, but you could smell it. It's at Chrysler and they can't figure out where the leak is coming from but they can smell the coolant when driving it. While I was there, another PT with the same problem came in. Is this a problem with PT's? They are about to tear it down on Monday, so please help!

Welcome treyle.

I'm curious as to why you came here now when the cars already in the shop waiting to be torn down.

Anyway, found this in a search. It's not for a PT but the process is the same.........

Q: I can smell coolant inside my 1998 Neon when the defroster is on. The dealer pressure-tested the system and then ran some dye through it but couldn’t find a leak. What could be causing this problem?

A: The ominous sweet smell of coolant inside a car usually means that either the heater core or its hoses are leaking. As the ultraviolet-sensitive dye used to reveal leaks didn’t appear and you don’t mention a decline in coolant level, the leak probably is the diabolical kind that oozes enough coolant to be smelled but not enough to drip from the heater housing so it can be seen or felt. You may have to dig for this one by removing the heater core housing and anything else in the way.
