my daughters 2001 started running hot yesterday, and after reading many posts here i tested the cooling fan on both the high
and low side with jumper wires, only got a slight movement on one side ,maybe a full revolution, and a plastic rubbing sound. nothing on the other side. i figure the fan is bad. so i decided to check my wifes 2005 to see if fan comes on when a/c is turned on. it did not come on. is it just pure bad luck that now i have to replace fans on both PTs ? or is there something else i can check on my wifes 2005 ? |

According to what I know and to what we have been telling owners and what I've proved to myself countless times (including just now.....when the engine is cold and you start it up WITHOUT the A/C ON, the low speed fan stays off, but as soon as you turn the A/C ON, the low speed fan should come on.
The high speed fan doesn't kick on till a particular temperature has been reached. The fan kicks OFF when you reach a speed of 35mph as there's enough air coming threw the radiator to keep everything cool. The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT), fan relays and PCM all work together in fan operation. There IS a difference between Turbo and Non-turbo fans/relays as the Turbo and a variable speed fan whereas the Non-turbo has a low and high speed. |

update: stopped working on daughters 2001 when it was obvious the fan went bad. removed, cleaned terminals and reinstalled both the high and low speed relays, also removed, cleaned, and reinstalled battery terminals, reset computer in my wifes 2005. all is fine now, low speed fans is on, rough idle gone a/c working fine. she is test driving vehicle now.

now that ive completed my bath. i wanted to thank CREWZIN for taking the time to post pictures and and tech info as hes does. it seriously made this a simple repair. as always i spent money only for parts on our PTs. both my girls love them. what a great forum.

That's a good possibility if it wasn't exactly made for the PT. Do you know if it was a generic replacement or an exact PT Cruiser replacement?

On my 2005 PT Cruiser 2.4L the engine fan does not seem to cycle for the AC, however it does cycle for the engine cooling system only.
Do you know what triggers the AC system to start cooling? Is it a relay or some sort of independent sensor? when the engine idles the AC system gets warm, it also has been venting refrigerant when I raise the isle in park, signifying its not cooling properly. Any and all information would be helpful, thanks in advance. ![]() |
