I read on other sites that pt cruisers use generators instead of alternators. Would I be able to just swap out the oem for a high output alternator, or do i need to change some wiring from the generator?

The PT uses an Alternator with a built-in generator. You should be able to just replace the one you have with a higher output unit as I was given the choice of a higher output when I replaced mine but stayed with the OEM specs, but I'd do some more checking here or at your local auto store.
