When I start my 02 the rpm's jump up to about 1500 for a second. I never noticed this. Is it normal or dose it have something to do with my idle problem?

Shouldn't jump. Could have a dirty/malfunctioning IAC or a loose/torn/unconnected vacuum hose.

Cant wait for the weekend to look into all of this. What about the manifold gaskets? Do they have a rep for going south?

No, they are rubber/silicone and be re-used over a couple times, but you can try re-tightening them. It only takes 8 ft lbs for each nut (5) so don't over-do it, they break pretty easily. If loose, you'd have a vacuum leak which would cause problems, but they don't come loose by themselves. Have yo had any work done lately?

Last time I worked on it was to put in new plugs and wires to try to solve the idle problem. So the problem was there. I would like to know how to test the IAC if any one knows how. Just one of the things I would like to check. Dont want to just clean and hope and at 80 bucks I dont want to replace it if its good.

I haven't done it myself, but it's pretty easy to take off and I'm told by someone who did it that you can see how it works and can see if there's any trapped dirt/debris inside and clean it out. One owner found it was clogged and wasn't working right and cleaning it solved his idle problem.
