02 PT limited 40K mi. Error code PO171

I have a 02 PT Cruiser with over 40K mi. and my engine light came ON and the Error code is PO171 ; Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1. If anyone can give info on what sensor or part needs replacing i would be grateful. Thanks Mac02

P0171 - 1/1 Fuel System Lean - A lean air/fuel mixture has been indicated by an abnormally rich correction factor.

There are a number of possible causes including:

Restricted Fuel Supply Line
Fuel Pump Inlet Strainer Plugged
Fuel Pump Module
O2 Sensor
O2 Signal Circuit
O2 Return Circuit
O2 Sensor Heater Operation
Throttle Position Sensor Sweep
MAP Sensor Operation
ECT Sensor Operation
Engine Mechanical Problem
Fuel Contamination/Exhaust Leak

Thanks Travis2k, I'm going for the oxygen sensor 1st and check it out. i was hoping someone had the same problem and knew the problem part, alot of items to check, and they are expensive...Mac02

I'd check the first oxygen sensor... you can see it looking directly behind the engine....

A couple weeks ago I had P0138 and P2097 codes, but they were related to the second O2 sensor, the one that's at the cat. It cost $25.. not sure of the cost of the first one.

For anyones info. I removed the 02 oxygen sensor from the manifold. Cleaned the soot off it with small fine wire brush and air blew it with compressor then sprayed it with Tuner cleaner, similiar to brake cleaner and air blew it again and installed it. Cleared the engine light and drove it 10 miles and so far no engine light. so hopefully it cured the problem. thanks for info travis2k Mac

No prob... just keep an eye on it. My light went on and off for a few weeks until I finally replaced my O2 sensor and cleared the code. Been about 3 weeks now with no issues.

I probably could have cleaned it and reinstalled but if I am going to get underneath the car I might as well replace the $25 part.
