Hotter Cams

It's not time yet, but when it comes time to replace the timing belt, I was thinking about some 'hotter' cams.

I actually like the power of my N/A PT as I don't drive very fast, but I would really like a little better acceleration. My main beef is that the 2.4l doesn't come on cam until like 3500, 4000 RMP, right when the tranny wants to shift.

So, question is: since there is no VVT, are there any cams that will improve that lack of acceleration, even at the sacrifice of lower top end speed and torgue?

You might find an answer here but the people you really want to speak to are located at PTCrew.com - Learn it or Burn it. It's free to join and register. Most of the members are into speed and although there's mostly talk about turbo's, I'm sure there are owners that have taken an N/A cruiser and threw some money at it to beef up. You might find that just throwing in a cam is not enough and a few other modifications are needed. Oh, and watch out for the tranny. It's a weak link even without modifications to the engine.

You are absolutely correct in the car not moving till about 3000 r's.. it's night and day below 3,000 r's and above 3,000 r's.

But truthfully, thats not all in the cams. I mean, part of it is.. but remember, tiny 4 cylinder motors dont produce any torque unless they start turning rpm's. With rpm's comes power. So thats mainly what you are feeling.. is the cars natural power band.

BUT. If you find the right set of cams (and I'm sure they are out there), you will actually pick up power/speed, and SHOULD increase gas mileage. But you need to find a group of people that really know what they are talking about in this respect, and a source to find cams for the car.

Just be aware if your state does emissions testing, you may run into trouble passing...

That is certainly possible.. thats why you have to make sure they are 50-state legal cams that are NOT for offroad use only.
