I also drive the Interstate, but at 65. If we both leave the same place at the same time you will get to our destination 10 minutes per hour sooner. I'll have more gas in my tank.

Don't get me wrong, I have driven around 70 mph and my mileage dropped also, but averaging more than 25 - 27 highway is still better than 22. I have decided I'm not in that much of a hurry any more.

It's more like we both start at the same time.. you arrive to NY from NC in 12 hours. I go 80mph, and arive in about 10 hours.

Thats a big difference

Yeah I've only been tracking my mileage since July 1 but decided to test the theory of dropping 5-10 mph and I have seen a difference... I've went from 20 mpg on my work commute to 23 over the last few tanks...

No doubt I can get 25-27 on my next highway trip.

No doubt, each individual needs to evaluate how they drive, relative to time allotted and mileage. Key here, is the ability of the PT's engine to be efficient. So, you have to measure it's efficiencies against your time restraints.

I don't think it's wholly unreasonable to look for a happy medium. I believe you should be able to optimize your engine's efficiencies and make decent time also. To me, this starts, at driving most PT's between 60-65MPH. This way, you still have some speed to get you where you need to go (in a reasonably timely fashion) and it should also give you mileage numbers in the 24-26MPG range.

I think another option/product that might "buy" you slightly better mileage, is to invest in a high-performance air-filter (like a K&N). It won't break your bank (K&N's are around $35, on-line) and according to K&N, might get you an additional 2-3MPG (along with not having to replace your air-filter again). It seems to me, if our inefficient PT engines need help; it is help in the "breathing" apparatus part of the equation. My 2-cents.

^and like I've told you, I'm already up 2-3mpg on the highway with my SRI installed.. and i'm sure afte I've gone thru a few tanks it will get better. This was going about 5-7mph over the speed limit btw

85, I'm thinking about just dropping in a K&N air filter and see what the result is? For me, this is a less expensive and benign way to not break the bank, still have "plug & play" simplicity and still gain some extra mileage.

For all to know, I guessed a little low on the K&N air-filter for the PT. Most on-line sites are around $40 (some w/free shipping, some not), not $35 like I previously stated. Good luck to all and thanks for all the inputs.

Your not talking about just a drop-in are you? Because thats almost worthless. Your talking about the entire conical filter right?

My preference is the drop in because it is the easiest to install. But I might also look at the conical filter? How difficult is that to install (web-site info)?

The drop in K&N is touted to increase power and mileage appreciably. K&N says the drop in "may" increase your mileage 10-15%. Many friends who have both 4 and 6 cylinder engines say that was the smallest amount of mileage increases they experienced. So I'm not so sure the drop in is totally "worthless"?

K&N's installation instructions and dyno numbers are here. It's simple to do. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. It's really too bad the Volant system doesn't fit the newer cars. I think it's a much better design than the K&N being that it comes with an an box that draws right from the fender opening, not just a plastic shield like the K&N has.
