Trans. fluid level fluctuates!!!!

I had the trans. fluid & filter changed about six weeks ago and the shop put two qts. extra in. I took it back a couple days later and they siphoned it out. I checked the fluid level hot every day the following week and it was a tad high (just below the notch in the dipstick, no big deal). I decided today to check the level hot and it read three qts overfilled and very foamy but red. I checked it two more times and it was still three qts over and foamy. I drive home a few miles and checked it again and it read three qts over and foamy but when I let the car idle for a minute the fluid level was perfect with no foam. What the heck is going on? I always thought you could just check the trans. when hot and idling and it should be accurate. Outside temp. was 90* & humid and she shifts fine.

There's a procedure to check the level, like run thru the gears or some such - read up on it.

Did that...I moved the shifter thru each gear position for three seconds and back into park while on a level surface. I've checked plenty of tranny's in my time and this the first time this has happened.

Could there be air in the tranny? Causing the foaming?
