Hi all, I am newly the (proud?)(not sure yet) owner of an 01 n/a cruiser. After reading through posts for several hours I still have a few questions. I see many threads where people with n/a cruisers say they will at least chirp the tires on takeoff. My particular pt can be pulled on by my daughter on her tricycle for at least three telephone poles from a stand still. WOT makes the condition worse, 1/4 throttle gives much quicker accelleration. The power band is quite wonderfull though, just like most posters it comes in at about 3000 revs. However unlike most ive read it doesnt upshift just past the pickup, even at 1/4 throttle upshifts dont occur untill well past the 4500 mark and if you add more throttle as revs increase it will blast past redline at 3/4 throttle causing me to have visions of rods stuck in the pavement. Saying that, if you use less than 1/8th throttle it shifts right about the time the power comes on. Now the shifting doesnt bother me, I will worry about that later. What does concern me is the serious lack of power from the 2.4l plant under the hood. I know just about everyone asks this question but mine is a bit different. What is the best aftermarket intake to install on the pt for low end tourqe. Not the breather tube that everybody calls an intake. I mean the intake manifold bolted to the head with injectors and tb on it. Anyone know of a quad tb setup like weber carbs for this engine? Another thing, would adjustable cam gears be a good investment with stock cams on this sled or just a waste of time and tuning? Im not trying to build a race car. I would just like for the thing to get out of its own way if i tell it to. Top end and rev limiters dont concern me, just low end power and not getting left in the dust by some guy on a power chair! If any of you are in illinois let me know, cause I would really like a pt enthusiast to drive this thing and tell me if it seems normal. Three weeks into owning this cruiser and im sadly dissapointed. I would really like to do some body mods cause I like the styling but if it wont move its got to go. Sorry for the rant btw. Any help or places to look will be greatly appreciated as I am not much of a chrysler tech, mainly imports and gm. P.S. all sensor readings looked good as read from a genisys scanner including tps sweep. Im wondering if someone hasnt put a timing belt on a tooth off? Anyway enough for now, Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you picked someone's PT that hasn't been properly taken care of. Yo haven't said what kind of mileage is on your PT but whatever it is, throw in some Platinum plugs gaped at.040in and a decent set of plug wires (not Chrysler OEM wires). Next thing is to have the transaxle flushed, not just drop the pan, flushed out with 16 new quarts of ATF+4.
There is no replacement upper manifold and throwing more TB's on won't do a darn thing and don't even think of adding that Throttle Body Spacer that you read about in magazines. Yes, the low end pick-up does improve if you open up the air intake and if don't like the tube type, then modify the OEM air filter by replacing the filter with a more free flowing paper/cloth type and getting rid of any restrictions inside the filter itself. There's nothing wrong with the tube type if you stick with the K&N, Air-Raid or Volant filters. There's a Volant system for sale right now in the "for sale" section of the forum. I can't tell you about the CAM stuff but if your going that far you might as well dump more money into the engine and hand it over to a machine shop. Other things to do is run a few bottle of injector cleaner threw the fuel system and look around for a fee flow exhaust. It will reduce weight and let the engine work better. I have a little under 100,000 miles, tube intake and Dyno Max exhaust. That's it for performance and it will chirp the front tires on the right roads and keep up with 99% of the rest of the cars on the road. Unless there's something wrong internally, yours should do the same with proper maintenance. The problem is that you don't know how the previous owner treated the cruiser.

Where to begin where to begin...
If you have a bit of money (couldn't tell you how much.. I haven't done any research.. YET), but cams and an intake and chip are the BEST things you can do for the money. Aftermarket cams will yield better gas mileage AND more power. But for right now, here is what you need to do. Flush the trans. Put synthetic motor oil in, get a SRI (buy the biggest filter, either K&N or AEM or APC you can find, and put that on to the end of the bendy stock intake pipe), buy better plugs and gap them correctly, buy better wires and maybe even a coil, and check your tire pressure. I typicall go about 5psi over the max load (read the tires for how many psi they require, then add 5). That should get you off to a good start.

Welcome.
If you want to keep the '01, start with this: Volant cold air intake for non-turbo and follow the advice on the other posts. I'd say that before you look to pump a lot of money in, you consider trading and getting a turbo. If you don't want to run premium, look for an '04 on "turbo lite" that runs on regular.

Do not buy an aftermarket coil. A waste of money and the stock coil is more than adequate. Don't buy an SRI. They suck hot engine air and cost you some hp/tq. Do get a K&N drop in filter. It drops into the factory airbox which doesn't suck in hot engine air. You won't notice a power increase, but you won't lose any either. You'll also notice a faster 1st to 2nd shift in the automatic. The lull between gears 1-2 will be gone. There aren't any decent chips out there for the na PT and the ones on ebay are garbage.

I've heard there are some decent kenne bell and mopar chips out.. and if you get cams, an intake and ignition system you will pretty much NEED a chip/tuner of some sort to take advantage of the new mods and maximize them.

Ah you are probably right about the Kenne Bell.. I'm not huge into the PT game (though I try to be). But if anything they can be found used then retuned I'd imagine.
If I got cams and an intake and/or exhaust, I'd DEF. get the jet chip and have them custom program it for the mods. Who sells cams for these pts though?
