2002 - upgrade to 2003 auto shifter lever

Basically, I want a chrome-stem ball-style shifter from the newer PT's in my 2002.

I've found an assembly on E-bay from a 2003 that I could swap in, but am hoping there is a faster/cheaper solution. Can anyone with a new shifter give some insight about how the stem and knob mount? Is replacing the whole gear-change assembly required??

I don't really like the looks of this:


I also found the Kustom Kruzr knob:



But prefer the stock look of the Chrysler part.

Any other options??

I just ordered the assembly from Ebay.

It seems to be from a 2003 turbo.

Very nice. Didn't know they changed shifters from n/a to turbo. Good luck on on the switch.

I received the shifter assembly from Ebay today. I failed to notice in the picture that this is an AUTOSTICK. So obviously, the gear selection window, electronics and mechanics of the lever are different than the 2002 normal auto gate.

I've dissassembled the AUTOSTICK to find how the chrome shaft is attached to the linkage. I hope to simply remove the chrome shaft from the 2003 linkage and replace it into my 2002 linkage without too much trouble.

This leaves the the illuminated gear selection window. The AUTOSTICK has a leather shift boot that I would like to keep. However, I'm afraid that my 2002 molded plastic gate cover also slides the gear indicator. Once the cover is removed, the gear indicator may no longer work.

Next step is to remove the center console to find out how much of my 2002 shift linkage matches the 2003. I may need to mod some parts to make this work....

I performed this swap and wrote the guide with photos at www.ptdiy.net about 5 years ago. The part numbers for everthing needed is posted in the guide. The parts were ordered from Chrysler and are not very costly.

I think you have to join. It is a good site, MX-5 wrote and donated many of the "fixes" before they started charging to join, hope he is getting "residuals", Yeah, right!!!
