check engine light....HELP!

last night the engine light came on.
i have a 2007 pt cruiser non-turbo with 26000 miles.
after the light came on, when i was driving it home, the car jerked after it swithed to 3rd gear. it jerked about 2x1000 rpm or 3 not sure. i dont know what might be wrong and i want to know might be wrong before taking it to a mechanic or dealer.
it only started jerking after the light came on.
i thought it might be that it needs oil change or something. its been more than 3000 miles since i changed it.
who knows.

To retrieve OBDII Error codes from your Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge vehicle, do the following sequence with the key: ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON and look at the odometer, that is where codes will be displayed. Please do the turning of the key within 5 seconds, longer than that and it won't work.

The step by step version:

1. Place the key into the ignition.

2. Turn the key towards the windshield (without starting the engine) and back again.

3. Do the above 3 times and with the last turn the key left pointing forward (towards the windshield).

4. All three turns should be made within 5 seconds. (it's not hard).

If you did it right, in the middle dial where the odometer is, the fault codes stored in the computer will come up. Example: P0138

If there's no codes stored in the computer, it should read "done".

That's it. Pretty easy.

Your local auto parts store (Autozone, Advance Auto, etc) should be able to help you by hooking the scanner up to your car to check for error codes.

It's usually a free service.
