I have had my PT for a short while now, got it used. It worked fine (it seemed) when I got it but now the oil light comes on when I'm idle. As soon as the car moves forward, the light turns off. I have checked the manual and all it said had to do with the light staying on while moving. I took it to a Chrysler dealership and they told me it was leaking oil; wanted $1,700 dollars to fix it. I got it "fixed" at a privately owned repair shop. He was given the diagnostic and repaired everything on it but the light again turned on when I got to an idle about ten minutes down the road.
It's odd b/c it only happens sometimes and those times are spontaneous. They can be at startup but never happen again, or after some time on the highway then going to a stop. Has anyone else had anything like this happen? or maybe there is a kind mechanic out there who has seen this and is wanting to give some friendly advice. I REALLY NEED THE HELP!!!! -Nervous |

If your shop hasn't done it yet, the easiest and fastest thing to do is replace the oil sending unit. The next thing to check is the oil pump.

Agreed because the sending unit is a weak link.

I got new seals, spark plugs, oil filter, an oil change, and new hoses. He charged me 250 for everything.

You may want to try a mechanical oil pressure guage (temporary in place of the sending unit) to see your actual oil pressure.

I have a 2002 pt that does the same thing. The light usually comes on when it is hot outside and i've driven for an hour.

Isn't the ability to maintain steady oil pressure determined by the main bearing and rod bearing clearances, as well as the output of your oil pump? I guess it's possible that your sending unit could be bad. That would be the cheapest part to throw at it, to see if it would fix the problem. How many miles do you have on it?
