Default Alternator replacement

I had written several months ago that the alternator on my Cruiser had died. Well I finally had the extra funds to buy a replacement one but still not enough to have a garage do the repair. This afternoon a friends son who is a professional mechanic came by to help me out. He's got the alternator loose but can't get it out as the passengers side drive shaft is in the way. What is he missing to get the alternator out or does the drive shaft have to come out?

It is a PAIN IN THE A$$$! Sometimes if you hold your tongue just right and cross your fingers and turn it just right you can get it out through the top. Seriously it is a pain. You could try taking the top motor mount loose and the lower one loose which will allow you to rotate the engine forward and get it out through the top.

Not much to go on.
How many miles?
When you try to start - does it crank?
