Default ..headlight bulbs and adjustment..

...when adjusting the headlight alignment, which turning direction of the screw raises the light pattern and do both sides turn the same direction to raise or lower? What's the real story on what replacement bulb to use to get the brightest night driving lights without modifying the o.e. wiring harness??

I'm not sure about the adjustment, but as far as the lamps go, I have been using the Eagle 80 (9006) watt ultra white lamps in the Low beams, and the eagle 100 (9005)watt Ultra white lamps in the high beams. I am also using the Gold 65 watt (9006) lamps in the fogs, and am very satisfied with all. With these lamps there is no undue strain put on the wiring harness. Been runnin this setup since the 2nd day that I had the cruiser (1 year this month). Got them all from http://www.midnightmoose.com at a decent price too.

GearHead,

What's up with Mopar trying to sell the Sylvania Silverstar bulbs for $27.00 a piece????

Direct from the Mopar website:

PT Cruiser, 300M, Interpid, Grand Cherokee (00-03) P09006XSST $27.00 ea.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your bulbs? Has any of the plastic housing melted or deformed due to use? I have seen many cars "upgrade" to brighter bulbs, i.e.-more wattage and/or color. The housings do NOT stand up to the extra power used (and resultant heat given off). The PT keeps the Low and High beams on when in high-beam mode.

Both adjustment screws turn the same way to raise or lower the beam. Been awhile since I adjusted my headlights so just watch the beam pattern on the wall. Believe counterclockwise raises the beam.

As far as higher wattage bulbs, some haven't had a problem, while others ended up burning/melting sockets, wiring, and had burn marks inside of the housing from the extra heat generated. Heavy duty Headlight Harnesses are available if you want to run 80w-100w bulbs. They are just plug in add-ons, include relays, and don't require any cutting/splicing of your current harness.

They run about $43 including shipping: http://jen.liu.tripod.com/suvlights/id14.html

Eliteshop on eBay sells 9005 and 9006 55w / 65w KÖBA Xenon bulbs for about $9 a pair plus shipping. They claim 4800K, which compare with OEM HP replacements SilverStars and PIAA SuperWhites and all the above are street legal. The 80/100W bulbs claim to have a 5500K rating, so it's up to you if you want the extra brightness (and heat). In some areas, you may be stopped and issued a ticket if the officer decides your higher wattage bulbs are blinding opposing traffic. Don't forget to apply some dielectric grease in the electrical sockets/connectors no matter which bulbs you decide to buy.

Can we get away using 9006 bulbs in the headlights? The manual calls for 9006XS which has the connector straight out the back as opposed to the 9006 which the connector is at 90 degrees. Is there any interference issues or modifications needed for the 9006?
Been looking at brighter bulbs but a lot of places don't carry the "XS" version and when they do, it's at a premium price.

Thanks

It will fit ok but when installing, the 90° angle connector on the 9006 bulb rubs against the rubber dust boot and if the rubber is hard, will make installation a bit difficult or hard to twist the bulb in. The connectors will go on ok though and many have gone this route rather than buying relatively hard to find locally, 9006SX (and 9005SX) bulbs. Just FYI, the export PT headlights use H-7 bulbs in the low beams.

Sci-Fi,
Thanks for the info. Been seeing a lot of 9006 bulbs on eBay listed for the headlights and wondered what the deal was. Are the H-7 bulbs brighter than the 9006 bulbs?
Thanks again

Technically no. But if you look at the export PT headlights pictured below, the low beams have a large heat shield, the opening is much larger, and the H-7 bulb plugs into an adapter. The high beams (9005) are to the right of the picture to give you an idea of the size difference. So even if you wanted to, there isn't any way to buy the H-7 adapter and then to make it fit your PT. The black box, with the wires coming out, you see below and to the left of the low beam is the headlight adjusting motor. Export parts cannot be ordered (special order or otherwise) through stateside dealers, Chrysler's main parts distribution center will not ship out the parts (I know first hand, I tried to order the headlight adjusting switch).
