Default Clutch slave cyl. question.

New to forum.
2001 Limited 2.4 (nov 2000 in-service date -just now ready roll 100,000 mi.)

Searched this issue and it appears that symptoms would call for replacing clutch slave cylinder - any comments about this would be appreciated before I go that direction. Here are the symptoms:

Started the engine but was unable to get it into any gear. Turned off engine, and was able to engage all gears while engine off. Put it in first. Restarted engine, and it wanted to creep forward while clutch was fully depressed.

Searched this forum, and found a similar problem. They pumped the clutch pedal several times with the car in neutral and engine running. After that everything worked fine for a while, but soon they had to replace the slave.

I tried the same thing, and got the same results. Works fine for a while - then I have the same problem. Go thru the pump clutch procedure, and all is again okay for a while. Obviously, whatever the problem is, it's going to blow for good soon!

Any comments or suggestions?

Most likely the slave cyl; particularly if you don't change the fluid regularly. It is hydroscopic and absorbs a lot of moisture. The water stays in solution pretty well as designed but sooner or later it will cause problems. It could be the master as well but likely the slave.....

Consider yourself lucky it's not the turbo; that one requires the trannie to be removed.
