Yep, total $541.57

A pressure test conducted today diagnosed the source of my leaking coolant: the rad itself. $180 for parts, 2.5 hours for labour, and an evac of the air conditioning.

Anthony,
Did the mechanic say why he had to evac the A/C system because of a leak in the radiator?

It was a may or may not have to contingency. It makes up 1/3rd of the overall cost.

It's just that you can replace the radiator without touching the A/C. I was wondering why that was part of the equation to fix the leak.

I see.
The service desk passed the info along from the computer and second hand from the mechanic himself. She wasn't sure if it was a mandatory job, but placed it in the quote as a contingency. I think, though, that I'll find another shop for this and any other repairs. |

Haven't taken the radiator out myself but have changed the fan and housing and according to the Chilton manual the only thing that has to do with the A/C is to disconnect the condenser from the radiator. Nothing about a discharge of the freon/R134.

I understand the A/C is a no-go zone for the home mechanic, but how difficult would it be to change the rad?

As I said, I never did the radiator but did do the fan housing and that's half the job of taking out the radiator so anyone with some decent tools and basic mechanical knowledge should be able to swap the radiator without too much of a problem.
