if it didnt get hot id say the head is ok
if you had to you can usally find shop that will resurface it to make sure it is stright
you have to do a gasket anyway be a good time to check the valves adn seats the big dollar cost is already there so seems like a good time to make it right
water pump all the belts and hoses and ready go some more

u could run a compression test on it and see . that would tell you more than likely if its a head gasket. also u could pull the upper intake off pull the plugs make sure is full of water and spin the engine , if water is gettin in the cylinders it will look like ole faithful when you spin it. a reman head for these cars are about 500-600 bucks depending on who you call. i would have the old one checked it might be saveable and if it never ran hot might not be anything wrong with it at all. im doing the same thing on a late 02 and having all kinds of issues. cant seem to get it timed and i had done the timing belt on this car 2 previous times along with the water pump the 2nd time.
